Frequently Asked Questions

What does my creative fee include?

The creative fee covers a pre-session consultation, time and talent to create your portraits at your session, as well as access to a collection of beautiful props and accessories.  Also included is full retouching of your images, and a three week password protected proofing gallery after your session.  The creative fee does not include any prints and/or digital files (aka images on disk).

When will my proof gallery be ready?

Your images will be ready for proofing in about three weeks, at which time you will be provided a login link and personal password for your online gallery.  You will be able to place your orders directly through your proof gallery.

Do you offer retouching?  Can you whiten my teeth, slim my tummy, hide my acne?

Absolutely.  Basic retouching is included in your creative fee.  If you desire additional retouching please ask about options.  Every individual client’s desires will vary, and we are happy to accommodate your wishes!

Do you have any safety training?

YES.  Kristen is certified in both adult and child first aid/CPR/AED.  In addition, she has taken newborn safety mentoring courses from leading newborn photographers in the industry.  She also maintains an approved background check through area schools where she volunteers with the music program.

Can my dog/cat/horse participate in our session?

We LOVE animals, and would be tickled pink to chat with you about including your pets in your session.   We welcome all breeds and are proud supporters of area rescue and foster organizations.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Kristen shoots with two Canon 5D Mark III professional series camera bodies, and a variety of professional lenses, flashes, and accessories.

Do you provide the props for newborn sessions?

Everything needed for your newborn session will be provided, including posing blankets, backdrops, prop baskets, hats, headbands, and more.  If you have items from your home, or special ideas, that you’d like to incorporate into your session, that is welcome and encouraged so that your session may be personalized to your family.

How long have you been in business?

Kristen Hinson Photography opened in 2008, and began offering posed newborn art photography in January of 2010.

What if my newborn doesn’t sleep?

Every baby is different, each with their own mini personalities and needs.   Many things can contribute to baby’s sleep pattern and it is often out of our control when their tummies are bothering them or they simply don’t feel like snoozing.  Even with the varying factors,  no baby can stay awake all day.  Out of 400+ newborns over the years,  there has only been one who did not want to sleep even the tiniest bit and we had to schedule a reshoot.

What rights do I have when I purchase digital files?

Digital files include a print release, which allows you to use your files to make prints, canvases, and other products at your convenience, as many times as you wish.  This print release is for personal use only; images may not be used for commercial use unless a special license is purchased.  Images may not be sold or given to stock sites.  You are welcome and encouraged to share your images on social media/Facebook/blogs.

How are my images backed up?

Until your ordered images/products/files are delivered to you, your images are triple backed on hard drives and online cloud storage.  After your order has been delivered, we typically back images for ONE year, although this can not be guaranteed so it is recommended that you make a backup copy of your digital files.

How long does a session last?

Newborn sessions last an average of 4 years, but may vary depending on baby’s temperament.  Outdoor portrait sessions (family, maternity, etc) typically last 60-90 minutes on location.

What if it rains on my session day?

Rain happens, and can be very unpredictable.  In the instance that your session needs to be rescheduled due to rain or poor weather, every effort will be made to reschedule you to a date that works best for your family.  For rescheduled sessions, a weekend date cannot always be guaranteed.

What types of payment do you accept?

Major Credit Cards (VISA, American Express, Mastercard), e-check, cash.

How far should I book in advance?

To ensure your date is available on the calendar, it is recommended that you schedule your session at least 2 months in advance.  Newborn sessions may be booked as soon as you reach the 3 month mark.

Do you bring an assistant?

Assistants are only needed at a newborn twin session.  In these cases, there is a surcharge of $50 which is used to pay the assistant.  All assistants used have passed a background check and are first aid certified.

Do you travel for sessions?

Sure!  For travel outside of the included base area (15 miles from the address in 28079), the federal standard rate of travel is used (presently $0.57/mile, subject to change).  For out of state or international travel, hotel accommodations may apply, please email for more information.  Kristen has traveled for sessions in South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia,  and Florida.
